For all you banana lovers out there, I too am in mourning. Bananas are a staple in my diet, and the banana industry is in moral decline.
I think it is important we all watch this video and lament on the history of the banana because it highlights an all too occurring theme in our history: Monochrome everything. Basically, when people get obsessed with something, they take it to extremes and create massive industries that end up doing more harm than good.
Yet, I do not agree GMO's are the answer, which was interesting that it was mentioned since Chipotle just announced it was going to stop selling GMO food. (Was this a sponsored video?)
What is GMO? It stands for Genetically Modified Organism. It's food that has been genetically altered through engineering techniques. GMO's have already taken over our grocery stores.
GMO's are becoming increasingly popular around the world, as well as increasingly controversial. Since they are quite new, research on their effects to humans (aka us) is not very substantial, yet many scientist, politicians and the like claim they are not harmful and we shouldn't worry.
But it's not natural.
And while they do provide crops that are resistance to pest, abundance of foods and, as in the case of bananas, a solution to plant extinction, I don't think we should be so readily trusting of GMO foods, nor do I think it is the solution.
If bananas are to go extinct, then I think I can learn to live without them. I will have banana withdrawal for weeks, maybe even centuries, but their extinction is a consequence of the over consumption and lack of breed diversity from our society, and it does not call for the acceptance of test tube food.

Lets not talk about what happened and instead focus on the review, okay? Yes, the challenge came to a screeching halt. Yes, I stopped after five days though I was feeling like a rockstar. But I have reason ie. too much food left to finish that I have to create my own Clean Eating Meal Plan. So, after five days I can safely concur that this was the best thing to happen to me. I felt really fantastic. Like I had so much energy everyday, I felt full and most importantly I felt happy. Usually at 2-3 p.m. I feel tired, ready to nap. Well not during the plan. What could it have been? I was probably getting all my necessary nutrients. The plan was also SO easy to follow. And it was exciting to follow too. Plus, it was filling and satisfying at the same time. This is definitely something I want to continue doing. I admit, I cheated day 6, big time. Plus day 7. And trust me, I noticed the difference. I once again felt tired, my digestion was out of wack and I just felt negative. Clean eating is revolutionary. I highly recommend everyone tries the plan, not for weightless or detox purposes, but for feeling great. Check out the plan here.

Five. It is day 5 of Buzzfeed's Clean Eating Challenge. Two more day, and I've made it a week. Wow. In terms of any challenge I have ever done before, this is a milestone.
So yesterday I wanted a cookie really really bad. I am a cookie monster, especially for peanut butter cookies. All day I could taste that warm, melted peanut butter. At 12:00 a.m., I found myself at Insomnia Cookies. But guess what? I didn't buy a cookie! Granted, by that point in the day I was craving sweet potato fries. I was trying to stay somewhat healthy. Thankfully (at that moment I was far from thankful though), the restaurant with the best sweet potato fries ever was closed, and I went home and ate a tangerine. So I am proud. I woke up this morning feeling really great, and I know if I had indulged in sweets or greasy food I would have woken up feeling sick. So I am really proud. Breakfast: I had cauliflower omelette. I LOVE cauliflower. But since last semester, I wasn't really allowed to eat it. For some reason last time I made it, the apartment STANK. For days. All because of the cauliflower. This time it didn't and the omelette was delicious. Additionally, I had a pear and a tangerine. Lunch: I didn't have the lunch the plan called for because I woke up late and breakfast became brunch. So instead I had the hummus with carrot and some cucumber, which was supposed to be today's snack. I also had two pieces of dark chocolate. If its not peanut butter, its chocolate. agh my life and food addictions.
Dinner: Dinner was incredible. I never realized how much I like salmon until now. It is easy and quick to cook. Kudos Mr. Salmon. I added Magic! spice to it. I love Magic! it takes food to a whole new level. The salmon laid on a bed on leftover lentils and green beans. Really satisfying, even though I made have had some of granola and honey after. I just wanted something sweet.. I gotta get over this habit. I finished the night off with a cup of tea. Day five complete, here comes day six!

So today I am keeping it brief because it's snowing and it's movie night in honor of snow day! Breakfast: Eggs! I finally got my wish of yesterday! They were good. No cheese. Lunch: not very satisfying. It was just salad. I think my lettuce was getting old. Dinner: I had a smoothie which was meant to be for a snack, but I had it for dinner. Mango and banana makes a very good combo. Then I had more frozen bananas with a little bit of almond milk to make "ice cream." Now I really really want cookies. Help.

Day 3: It felt weird to have tea without a cookie. Normally, like clockwork, 3:00 p.m. is cookie + coffee time. Not only can I not have coffee, I can't have cookie. Plus, I think my avocado was rotten because my stomach starting hurting. But, I mustn't complain... today was yummy as expected. Plus, for dessert, I had decadent hot chocolate and it was NOT CHEATING! Any plan that is topped off with chocolate is one worth trying. I must also mention that it snowed today, and while I was walking to class (&trying not to slide into a slippery death)it felt like I was walking on powdered sugar and it was beautiful, as well as oddly therapeutic. Classes were canceled (to what I and many others consider) a little too late, but at least I wasn't cold because the constant heart races, for almost slipping, kept me warm as I sweated with fear.
Anyways... to the menu! Breakfast: The day began with a yogurt parfait. It was really good. I have to admit, I was craving eggs, but I soon forgot about the eggs cause I was loving my parfait! I used coconut yogurt instead of greek yogurt because I am allergic to cow products. Mooooo! I also added some honey cause I like sweet. Lunch: So I was sitting in class munching on my salad and then the room got quiet, and I swear everyone could here me munch like a horse! At least I was enjoying my salad though! Who knew shaved carrots could be so good on a salad? Plus, the lime vinaigrette is a refreshing dressing to my regular balsamic and olive oil. Snack: I had two snacks today because lunch was not enough. I didn't add enough protein (only a teaspoon of hummus) so I got hungry early. To compensate I had two cups of green tea (sans the cookie...), a pear and the spoiled avocado. Then I spent the remainder of my afternoon trying not to think about food or dinner, and ignoring the growling tempest within my stomach. Dinner: Guess what? I had steak! Cauliflower steak! There is one important thing you should know about me, which I know I inherited from my mother, I like burnt food. Give me the burnt french fry because I love the crunch! I especially like burnt vegetables. I hate having nutrients in my veggies, so I prefer to kill them with flames. I'm only kidding! But these steaks were honestly cooked to burnt perfection. I laid them down on some lentils as the recipe called and watched TV. It was bliss. Snack: Tonight was hot chocolate. Went very well with the snowy weather.
Magical is the only word I can think of to accurately describe these oats. Magical because they have both the power of being delicious, healthy and incredibly filling.
I think it is safe to say today was my favorite day in this challenge. Yes, it is only day dos, but my gosh was the food so good and soo filling.
Breakfast: As stated, I began with the magical oats. Yummy yummy in my tummy. I dived into these oats so quickly I forgot to take a picture. So just for the sake of good reporting, I took the aftermath picture. -->
Lunch: Salad, but not just any salad. Good salad. I didn't have chickpeas though, so I improvised with sunflower seeds. I also didn't use kale, instead I had romaine lettuce cause I love its light, watery texture.
Snack: I had the midnight snack instead, so two clementines as my valentines. <3
Dinner: I finished the nights with mango, avocado tacos. I added some hummus for extra protein cause I aint about that chicken. I also had my tortilla with peanut butter and honey wrap. Yes I deviated again, but come on, I couldn't starve!
Anyways, I have to tell you something about the mango because cutting mango is difficult and I was an idiot. So please, learn from my mistake.
There's a funky way to cut a mango into cubes. You can read more about it here. I did it that way, and it was difficult getting the mango out! I think it was only intended if you are planning on snacking on the mango, not making a meal out of it. So don't do it that way. Peel the mango and then cut. Otherwise your are stuck struggling like I did. You have to admit, it makes for a pretty picture though :P.
Oh crap, I had two slices of 70% dark chocolate. Still healthy and totally within the confinements of the plan though! I suck as a test dummy. But I am trying to do better I promise!
